Is it true that going to Driver’s Ed. Will give me discounts on my car insurance? If so, what kind of classes should I look for here in Los Angeles, California?

Raymond

Los Angeles, CA

Yes, Accredited defensive driving schools and institutions can definitely qualify you for some discounts towards your auto insurance rates there in Los Angeles, California. Now the amount and duration of the discount you get will vary between states but the aim is generally the same. The safer the driver you become, the less the chance of you filing for an insurance claim and the less expensive for the insurance company to provide you further auto insurance coverage, thus the savings are passed on to you.

Defensive Driving Courses or Lessons can usually be taken with your State Department Of Motor vehicles but then again there are a lot of local accredited schools in your area that you can choose as well. These courses are offered to the general public, without any virtual limitations on the students age. Once you get your certification, call up your insurance provider so they can process applying the discount immediately.

You should still get in touch with your insurance provider before you undergo such classes though. Each Insurance provider will have their own rules or policy on how and when you will be receiving the additional discounts on your car insurance premiums. You should get at least three years worth of discount with most auto insurance companies. Some can add the discount immediately while others might insist adding it at the end of your insurance term so get the details first to know what you will be expecting after taking the said classes.

I need an SR22 auto insurance after being charged with DUI here in Los Angeles, California. How long do I have to maintain it and how long will my DUI stay on my record?

Virgil

Los Angeles, CA

It’s a good thing that you are now thinking about getting SR22 auto insurance after being charged with DUI in Los Angeles, California. You need the SR22 auto insurance so that you can get your driver’s license back at the end of your suspension period. That is actually a requirement by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to reinstate your driver’s license. You have to carry the SR22 auto insurance for three years under normal circumstances. But the terms can be extended with the presence of stricter enforcement of DMV laws and lobbying against drunk drivers.

The bad part about your DUI charge is that this violation would stay on your driving record for 10 years. It would be rated for points by auto insurance companies for three years, so that would be some relief, but most preferred insurers don’t take drivers with DUI violations, so it may be a long wait until you get that kind of policy. But you can absolutely get a free online rate quote for your SR22 auto insurance from this website.

I know that on my first court date for my DUI charge here in Los Angeles, California, I would have to plead guilty or not guilty for the charge. What other things usually happens during the first court hearing?

Izzie

Los Angeles, CA

Aside from the advisement of your rights, reading the charges against you and entering a plea of guilty or not guilty, there are some other things that would happen on your arraignment or first court date for your DUI charge in Los Angeles, California. This is when the court will decide whether or not to set bail, or whether any preliminary bail amount set by the police must be changed.

You driver’s license will also be confiscated and your California driving privileges will be suspended. If you have refused a blood alcohol test, the judge will schedule an administrative hearing with the Department of Motor Vehicles to determine if your privileges should be revoked for refusing the test. During the arraignment, the court will also schedule a future date and time for further proceedings regarding your DUI case. The judge would specify what the reason is for the next court appearance or proceedings. The reasons could include a preliminary hearing, a pre-trial conference, pre-trial motions, or trial.

Reader’s Question:

I heard my mom and my sister talking about getting an SR22 auto insurance or something like that. I kinda have an idea about it but I don’t really know exactly what it is. Is this one required after my sister’s DUI charge here in Los Angeles, California?

Harriet

Los Angeles, CA

Yes, Harriet, an SR22 auto insurance is required after your sister’s DUI charge in Los Angeles, California. This form would be an agreement between the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the insurance company which states that they are providing the required coverage for your sister. This also means that if for any reason the insurance company is no longer providing the coverage for her, they would have to notify the DMV about it. If this happens, the DMV could suspend her driving privileges again for not maintaining the required high risk auto insurance coverage.

So the SR22 auto insurance could be basically considered as a contract between the DMV and the insurance company. The first thing that your sister should do is to work out a deal with her insurance company if they could be able to provide her the SR22 auto insurance. If they can’t file the SR22 form for her, she would have to seek out other insurance company that could provide her the necessary coverage. I recommend that she get an online rate quote for her SR22 auto insurance directly from this website.

Oakley

Los Angeles, CA

Since you have a DUI charge in Los Angeles, California, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has suspended your driving license. You would have to obtain SR22 insurance policy to reinstate your license. Your insurance company will provide SR22 filling which serves as a proof of insurance to the DMV. In this way, the DMV is assured that an insurance company has provided at least minimum liability coverage for you. Your insurance company will immediately inform the DMV if the policy lapses for any reason.

In Los Angeles, the SR22 filing period is for three years. But the term can be extended depending on individual cases due to stringent insurance laws in Los Angeles. As soon as the SR22 filing period is over, the insurance premiums will be lower, depending on your driving history. The prices of insurance are based on your driving history and also on your driving experience. It’s great that you can get online quotes for SR22 car insurance from this site.

Bunny

Los Angeles, CA

Because of your DUI conviction in Los Angeles, California, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) suspended your driver’s license and you need to secure SR22 car insurance to have your license reinstated. SR22 filling is provided by insurance companies which serves as a proof of insurance to the DMV. That way the DMV is assured that insurance company has provided at least minimum liability coverage to you. The insurance company immediately informs the DMV if the policy lapses for any reason.

The rules regarding SR22 insurance may vary. In Los Angeles, generally, SR Filing period is three years. Due to stringent insurance laws in Los Angeles, however, the term can be extended depending on individual cases. Depending on your driving history, the insurance premiums will be lower as soon as the SR filing period is over.

Reader’s Question:

My older sister has just been charged with DUI here in Los Angeles, California. The lawyer said that she stands a big chance of getting the charges dropped and that’s good news for her. But I just want to know, what are the things that I must do if I am caught drunk driving?

Vanessa

Los Angeles, CA

It would be a good lesson for you and your sister not to drink and drive again since she was already charged with DUI. But in case it is unavoidable and if you will be caught drunk driving in the highways of Los Angeles, California, it would also be good to know what you must do.

First is that you can decline in a polite manner from answering questions without your lawyer around. You have to remember that the police report will contain only self-incriminating statements. Don’t undergo any sobriety tests on the field since this is not a requirement of the law. Unless you are younger than 21 years of age, you can refuse to undergo a hand-held breath test that is required by law if you are younger than 21. My advice is that you can agree to undergo a required breath test for evidence if you are confident that your blood alcohol level is below 0.8 percent. Lastly, make sure that your lawyer calls the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Driver Safety Office not more than 10 days after the incident. Your lawyer should formally ask for a hearing to contest the suspension of your driver’s license.

Reader’s Question:

My brother was convicted of a DUI in over 7 years ago in LA, California but has completed all of the requirements issued by the court. Is this now off of his record and does he still report it on license applications?

Sam

Los Angeles, CA

No. It will not be off his record yet.

New California legislation extended the reporting period for DUI offenses from seven to ten years for all public requestors.

According to the CA Department of Motor Vehicles, even if a DUI was previously taken off your record, it will now appear back on your driving record and will remain there until 10 years from date of violation. Under the new CA law, you may not qualify for a good driver discount again until 10 years from the date of your DUI violation.

Then, if your DUI was less than 10 years ago in Los Angeles, CA, it will still be on your driving record for public requestors, including insurance companies. If you are asked on a license application if you have DUI on your record, you would have to report this DUI that they will see when requesting your CA MVR.
